Swimming is a fun pastime, a great workout, and an important life skill, especially for those who live near water bodies. However, swimming well requires mastering some foundational skills.

The first foundational skill to learn is how to float. This will help you to feel comfortable in the water, which is a prerequisite for swimming well. You must also learn how to control your breath. This involves learning how to come out of the water to breathe deeply and hold your breath when you are submerged.

The next skill is learning how to kick your legs so that you can move in the water. It is also a way to stay afloat or tread water. Many use a floatation device while they are learning this skill. Stroking your arms against the water properly is also necessary. There are different swimming strokes, each of which requires different types of kicks and arm movements. These include the front crawl, the breaststroke, the backstroke, the sidestroke, and the butterfly stroke.

Mastering these foundational skills will enable you swim well when the need arises.
